An organism that harms the environment, food, health or property of human beings is called a pest. In the context of agriculture, any organism that damages a crop plant is called a pest. Most of the crop plants are attacked by pests causing serious loss and damage to the crops. The loss has been found to be to the tune of 30 per cent. The most common animal pests are insects but other small animals like rats and mice (rodents), and birds also attack crop plants. Pests destroy or damage crops during the different stages of their development from sowing till harvesting.\n

Insects cause a great damage to the crop plants. Besides destroying the standing crops, insects also transmit numerous disease-causing virus, bacteria and fungi. Locusts and grasshoppers cause severe damage to crops and trees by eating their entire foliage. Bugs and beetles eat and chew up the leaves and tender shoots. Termites and white ants cause extensive damage to the underground part of the plants. Aphids and mites suck the sap of plant organs. These crop pests also lead to low quality of foodgrains. Sometimes they completely wipe out large areas of standing crops leading to a famine in the country.\n

Methods Of Pest Control \n

To control pests, chemical and biological methods are employed. In biological method of pest control, some birds, insects or other organisms are deliberately put in the affected crop fields to kill the pests selectively. The biological method is a slow method and is highly specific and nonpolluting. In California (USA), citrus orchards were being badly damaged by scale insects leading to heavy crop losses. Australian ladybirds were used in these orchards to control these insects.\n

The introduction of disease-resistant varieties of crops is also one important biological method for controlling pests and crop diseases. Several new disease-resistant varieties of wheat, rice and other crops have been developed. Crop rotation also removes pests and diseases. Since parasites are very selective about their hosts, they get eliminated in the absence of the proper host. Treatment of seeds, like soaking in fungicide solution, also helps in removing diseases. Agrosan and ceresan are two common fungicides used for such treatment.\n

Chemical method of controlling pests involves spraying pesticides at suitable periods. A pesticide is a poisonous chemical used for destroying pests like insects, fungi, rodents, mites, etc. Some commonly used pesticides are DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), malathion, BHC (benzene hexachloride or gammexane), warfarin, copper oxychioride, zinc sulphide and sulphur. Pesticides may be classified as insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, weedicides and nematicides.\n

Weeds can also cause spreading of pests and thus in order to control pests, weeds also needs to be controlled. The process of removing weeds from a crop field is called weeding. Mechanical, biological and chemical means are adopted to control weeds. Each of these methods has some merits and can be applied separately or in combination with others. The different methods for controlling weeds are as follows:\n

1) Mechanical method: Weeds are removed manually by the use of hand, harrow, hoe or rake. It is a costly affair and takes a lot of time. Weeds are also removed by land tilling, mowing (cutting with a machine), burning and flooding.\n

2) Biological method: In biological method of weed control, a natural enemy (predator) of the weed is sed. Some appropriate insects or some other organisms are deliberately put into the crop field. These insects or other organisms destroy the weed plants selectively but do not harm the crop plants. A good example of biological control is that of prickly pear (Opuntia). Cochineal insects are used to eradicate the weeds. Carps (a type of fish) control effectively submerged water weeds like Hydrilla, Ceratophyilum and Lemna.\n

3) Chemical control: The chemicals used to kill weeds are called weedicides. Use of weedicides is easy, cheap and less time consuming. These increase the yield and ensure efficient use of irrigation, fertilizers and plant-protection measures. The weedicides may be used as spray or powder. Some of the common weedicides are 2,4 D (2, 4-dichiorophenoxy acetic acid), MCPA (4-chloro 2-methyl 1 -phenoxyacetic acid), butachlor, etc. A solution of the weedicide is usually sprayed on the standing crops in the fields. Since weedicides are poisonous substances, the grains must be washed before use. Weedicides are also called herbicides.\n

The elimination of weeds also helps in pest control.\n
